Join us for a conversation around one of the most haunting short stories of the twentieth century: Vladimir Nabokov’s “Signs and Symbols” (1948). In just a few pages, an elderly émigré couple set out to visit their troubled son on his birthday. Nothing goes quite as planned. A delayed subway, a gift that can’t be given, a few photographs, a phone that rings in the night. Nabokov builds a story in which every small detail seems to mean something, and then dares us to decide whether that meaning is in the world or only in the mind of the reader.
